France and Buddhism

More and more Westerners are feeling a strong need for spirituality which often gets fulfilled by their encounter with one of the different schoolsof Buddhism. This explains why more than 120 main Buddhist centers can now be found all over France, from Lille to Perpignan and from Quimper to Strasbourg. They include Tibetan, Southeast Asian and Far Eastern schools like Nyingmapa, Theravada, or Zen Rinzay center.
We cannot say that there is only one form of Buddhism; there are actually many of them. While Buddhism was spreading across Asia, it affected the different cultures it permeated. Passing from Tibet to China, Korea and Japan as well as to Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Vietnam and Indonesia, it finally arrived in the eastern Greek world and now in the Western World. These different civilizations also had an influence on Buddhism. We can actually say that Buddhism, in its living reality, is polymorphic. Both practical and rational, its different faces have attracted westerners according to their motivations. Some people are attracted by the austerity of Zen while others are drawn to the compassionate aspect of Buddhism. What makes such a flexibility possible is the fact that Buddhism is composed of a multitude of unique doctrines which coexist together like the islands of an archipelago or the stars of a constellation.
The real love story between France and Buddhism started when some French scientists like Gentil and Anquetil Duperron studied some Buddhist archeological sites between 1750 and 1776. In 1814, a Sanskrit faculty was opened at the College of France. The creation of the Asian Society in Paris in 1822 attracted a wider group of intellectuals. It triggered the publication of an “Essay on Buddhism” by Frédéric Ozanam and an “Introduction to Indian Buddhism” by Eugène Burnouf in 1845. It was followed by a translation into French language of the “Lotus and the Good Law”. In 1850, Henri Mouro discovered the site of Angkor and 25 years later Emile Guimet landed in Japan and admires the Buddha of Kamakura. On his return to Paris, he organized a big exhibit in the Trocadero on the theme of Buddhism. The first official French mission composed of geographers and ethnologists was sent to Lhasa in 1891. In 1907, the French Consul in Sichuan was invited together with his colleagues to learn Tibetan. One year later, the 13thDalai Lama established official diplomatic relations with the French government.
It is important to stress that the French specialists of Indian, Chinese, and Tibetan studies were the first westerners to study the history of Buddhism and the Buddhist texts. Different expeditions at the beginning of the 20th century like the Yellow Cruise of Citroen will contribute to a better knowledge of the Himalayan Kingdoms. But above all, it is the book by Alexandra David-Neel “Travels of a Parisian Woman to Lhasa”which will introduce Buddhism to the French people. Alexandra David-Neal was first interested in Buddhism when she met members of the Sinhalese Theravada School in London. She later traveled to Tibet get initiated into the Tibetan monastic rituals in order to transmit them to the West. She later published a Buddhist newspaper “the Buddhist Thought” together with Buddhist monks Rahula and Susuki, as well as Lama Govinda.
The invasion of Tibet in October 1950, the Tibetan genocide and the flight of the 14th Dalai Lama, the end of colonization in Vietnam, the arrival in Europe of Southeast Asian refugees and the rejection of the religious and political ideologies will bring young French intellectuals to the discovery and practice of Buddhism. A Japanese Zen master, Taisen Deshimaru arrives in France in July 1967 and starts the International Zen Association. He is followed by another Zen master, Taikan Jyoji. In the seventies, many Tibetanlamas take refuge in France and open many centers and monasteries where the various schools of Tibetan Buddhism are represented. The huge Cambodian and Vietnamese migration will lead to the creation of many pagodas. Finally, the International Buddhist Institute, which is also the Buddhist Center of Paris, will open in Vincennes in 1977.
“In the establishment of the spiritual vision of Buddhism on earth, there are three states: Buddhism in practice, Buddhism in essence, Buddhism as a mission.” The first step in bringingabout such a transformation in all spheres of life is to transform ourselves.”That is what I always tell French people who may be interested in following the path of Buddha. I gave a few days ago a lecture on Buddhism in Bretagne. More than a hundred people attended it. Most of them were young people. Some of them were already Buddhists. I told them that one does not merely become a Buddhist by learning about Buddha’s philosophy. One must have a vision of oneness with all creation and to experience this direct realization of cosmic unity, one has to make strenuous efforts to change our mode of perception. I explained to them that spiritual realization is only possible if we raise our psychic energy. Because we usually live in a confused and unharmonious state of mind, our energies are drained by destructive waysof life. Smoking, drinking too much, eating the wrong kinds of food or quarrelling, all waste tremendous amounts of energy. Only by developing a harmonious coherent state of awareness can we tune our minds to higher spheres of reality and this begins with the purification of the body and mind.
While talking to them, I really felt that I was one more little link of a long chain which started with Alexandra David-Neel and which stretched to infinity. A new Buddhism wave is coming over France. I hope that it will soon become a tsunami.
