IRAN AND BUDDHISM

I just received an invitation from my old Iranian friend, Dr.Rasuli, wholives in the historical city of Ispahan. I am planning to visit him for a week during the month of June and discover at last that magnificent city.

Following my friend’s letter, I suddenly became curious about the history of Buddhism in that part of the world and its influence on Iranian people.I therefore dug into my libraryand opened many dusty books which I inherited from my grandfather. Many of them had obviously not been opened since the Second World War. I found amazing facts which I would like to convey to you today.

According to a Buddhist legend preserved in Pali, Buddhism seems to have first entered Iran during the life of Buddha Sakyamuni. The story speaks of two merchant brothers from Bactria, on the border of modern Afghanistan, who visited Lord Buddha eight weeks after his enlightenment. They became his disciples and then returned to Iran to build temples dedicated to him. Whatever the historical validity of this story may be, there is strong evidence to show that the region between the Afghan city of Balkh (near Uzbekistan) and the Iranian city of Kirman became a major Buddhist region and remained so up to the Arab Muslim invasion of the 7th century.

When we talk about Iran at that time we have to consider the entire Persian Empire. We should not forget that the Iranian people spread over Central Asia from roughly 500 BCE onwards. This would include modern day Iran, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Afghanistan. This expansion can be compared to the one of the Turkic people.

Less than fifty years ago, edicts inscribed on rock pillars promulgating the ethical standards of the Buddhist philosophy were discovered in Qandahar, Afghanistan. During the first century, the Balkh area was famous for its Buddhist temples.

Legend attributes the erection of 84000 stupas to Ashoka. It is widely agreed that without Ashoka’s patronage of Buddhism, it would have remained another minor Hindu sect as opposed to the great world religion it is today. The famous 7th century Chinese pilgrimHsuan-tsang observed a large number of stupas near Jalalabad and Qandahar (a recent stronghold of the Taliban!).It seems that during that time Buddhistm had met little or no opposion from "rival" religions.

This was to change under the Sassanian Dynasty when Zoroastrianism was declared the state religion of the Persian Empire in 224. Under instruction from the highly influential Mobad (High Priest), Kartir, Buddhists were persecuted and Buddhist temples were burnt down. But practicing Buddhist communities continued to exist in several places, including Baluchistan. Excavations in Khorasan (in the northeastern part of Iran, near Turkistan), have unearthed coins bearing the head of Buddha, following the tradition of coins bearing religious deities significant to the people of the region. Later on, the Buddhists met even more hardship at the hands of the White Huns or Hephtalites who invaded in the 5th century. Buddhism had a period of calm when the White Huns were defeated by the more tolerant Turks who allowed the religion to continue.

Buddhism eventually demised with the Arab Muslim invasion of the 7th century. The Muslim considered Buddhists idol worshippers and did all they could to destroy "heretical"temples and deface artwork. Even one of the most famous representationsof Buddhism, the massive Buddha rock carvings at Bamiyan were vandalized, a task that was tragically completed when Taliban blew up what remained of the statues in 2001 with explosives, tanks and anti-aircraft weapons.

In the same way that Iranian scholars contributedto the propagation of Islam during the Muslim period, Iranian scholars were also instrumental in the spread of Buddhism. According to Chinese historical sources, the first Buddhist missionaries to travel to China were Parsi scholars. Among them was An Shikao (a Chinese version of the Persian name), a prince who had left his crown to his uncle after the death of his father to search for mental peace and contemplation.
Few people know that the city of Bukhara derives its name from "Bahara" which in turn comes from the Sanskrit "Vahara" meaning temple or holy place but referring specifically to a Buddhist place of worship. There are still many villages in Iran with "Bahar" in their names. Buddhism was at one point adopted as the state religion of the Sassanian court under King Piroz, although this may have been for more political reasons as the king was forced to flee from Persia by the conquering Arabs and adopting Buddhism was a way to gain favor with the Chinese whom he planned to ask for military assistance.

Although many of the information I gather in my old books are fragmentary, it is clear to see not only the influential role that Buddhism played in the development of Iraniancivilization but also the important role played by the Iranians in the development of Buddhism, an overlooked part of Buddhist history.
